The 12 episodes of Castaway Diva was our Christmas -> New Years treat -- watching 2 episodes a day. There are two stories in this series.
The main one is an 8th-grade K-pop fan girl, Mok-ha, who has dreams of becoming a K-pop singer and star just like her idol Yoon Ran-ju. When Ran-ju has a contest to find a young singer to appear with her on TV, Mok-ha sees this as her big chance to escape the small fishing village/island she lives in, and perhaps achieve her dream. Mok-ha has a friend Ki-ho with a video camera and editing skills who makes a music video of her and sends it in. But there is a complication.
This brings in the second story element of their abusive fathers. When Mok-ha and Ki-ho decide to run away and take a ferry to Seoul, her father learns of it and manages to get on the ferry just as it is leaving. But not before beating up Ki-ho and leaving him battered on the dock. After a brief chase, he corners Mok-ha on the back of the boat and both end up in the water.
But as it is a very foggy day there is no rescue. Of course, by the name of the show, you know she ends up on a deserted island.
(All of this happens in the first episode, so I'm not giving much away here).
When Mok-ha is finally rescued her idol is now pretty much a has-been. So will she even get a shot at singing with her? Does she have any chance at stardom? Will she reconnect with Ki-ho? And how will their fathers affect the rest of their lives?
Good casting, especially, Mok-ha. Both the younger and older actors for Mok-ha are very good. The older Mok-ha is played by Park Eun-bin, which was a treat for us as we liked her performances in two other shows: The Kings Affection (a period piece in which she plays the twin sister of the crown prince); and Extraordinary Attorney Woo (in which she plays an autistic lawyer).
Now she is playing a singer and she does all of the vocals herself.
If you are new to K-Dramas, this one happens to be dubbed in English -- which is unusual. But I prefer the subtitles to get the actors' inflections and have the audio match the mouths of the actors.
